Abstract

This study examines the evolution of social realism in Urdu prose, exploring how writers have reflected societal struggles, class disparities, and human emotions within the changing socio-political context of the subcontinent. The paper traces the emergence of realism from the early reformist writings of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan to the modernist prose of Prem Chand and beyond. It highlights how Urdu prose became a mirror of social consciousness, capturing the pain, resistance, and aspirations of ordinary people. Through literary analysis and historical contextualization, the research establishes social realism as a key force in shaping Urdu prose’s moral and ideological framework.
