Keywords:
Urdu novel, cultural decline, postcolonial identity, civilizational crisis, nostalgia, modernity, tradition, narrative formAbstract
The modern Urdu novel reflects the complex social and cultural transformations of South Asian society, often mirroring the anxieties of identity, modernity, and moral disintegration. This study examines how the theme of civilizational decline emerges as a dominant narrative in contemporary Urdu fiction. Through a critical reading of key texts by writers such as Intizar Hussain, Abdullah Hussain, and Quratulain Hyder, this article explores how the loss of traditional values, colonial disruptions, and post-independence disillusionment shaped the collective imagination. The analysis reveals that cultural decay in the Urdu novel is not merely a reflection of nostalgia but a conscious artistic engagement with questions of memory, belonging, and national identity. By combining sociological and literary perspectives, the study underscores how Urdu novelists portray decline not as finality but as a phase of introspection and renewal within cultural consciousness.
